If you’d like to travel more and if you are a “normal” person from the economic point of view, I mean, if you need to work to pay your bills, if you would like to eat out in a good Italian restaurant next Friday but after checking your bank statement you’ll decided to eat a pizza at home and if you wait for the end of season sales to buy a new pair of shoes, well…. In this case you will have to make some lifestyle choices if you really want to begin traveling.
By trying to find ways to save money for my trips I’ve realized that one of the many available possibilities to cut my personal expenses was related to the presents that I give to relatives and friends during all year round (birthdays, Christmas and so on).
Have you ever stopped to think about how much you spend in gifts during the year? I have, some years ago, and then I began to think…
Many people make useless presents. Because of the occasion or tradition, we need to choose something as a present. Maybe the person has already everything and wouldn’t need even a needle. However, there we go and we end up spending 70 euros in a black bag for example that will become the person’s 43rd bag.
It was then that I realized that I could save many euros by simply changing the kind of presents that I give. Instead of buying that bag, I realized that I could spend 20 euros for a different present and save 50 to pay at least one night in a hotel.
What to buy with those 20 euros? A good bottle of wine, chocolates, a book, tickets to the movies, to the theater… Be creative! And then, 20 euros, or even 15, became my budget to my presents.
Another example: it may be very fashionable to give a smartphone as a gift to your husband, your girlfriend, even your kids. Probably they will be very happy when they see that they’ve just received the newest model of their preferred smartphone producer….. but how much will you spend for this? And the main question: why, if they have already an working, relatively new smartphone?
If you’ve decided that you need to save money to travel more, wouldn’t it be better to find something cheaper? or even better something that leaves a lasting emotional effect impressed in their memories?
Thinking about that I’ve made a kind of agreement with my partner: we don’t give each other anything expensive, never. And we are very comfortable with that choice. That allows us to put money apart and plan a next trip.
Moreover in many occasions we decide to travel instead of buying each other a present.
Soon you will probably deal with Christmas shop. Think about it!
The same is valid for yourself. Instead of buying useless things, begin to save some money to be invested in an adventure. Yes, travels are investments in happiness.
Begin to perform this change in your life. Give experiences (and ask for experiences) instead of expansive presents or useless objects. You will make people happier and at the same time you will begin to save money for your dreams!
