Sometimes both me and my partner need to be in the middle of nature, surrounded by woods, away from any noise different from bird calls and the wind on the leaves of the trees. It will be due to the stressful life or maybe only the desire to discover new paths, however the fact is that we often go to the mountains somewhere.
So a few weeks ago I was seeking new ideas about hiking routes on the internet. Given the warm days of July, I wanted a “cool” trail, something like a route through a shady green forest with the relaxing sound of a river in background.
It was then that I read about the Sentiero del Fiume (Trail of the River, in Italy), which I liked right away from the name. The photos I found on the net inspired me and then I found out that it was not too far from home, so we decided to go to see it closely.
The Sentiero del Fiume runs along the Valley of Era to the Alp of Era largely within a gorge following the torrent stream, which forms countless waterfalls, fords and natural pools in its downhill run towards the Lake of Como.
The peculiarity of this route is the mandatory crossing of these fords and pools, passing continuously from one side of the river to the other, and consequently you will get a little bit wet (up to your knees at the deepest point and higher water flow, but without any difficulty to point out).
In some points the trail is equipped with iron chains that help us to overcome the most exposed sections in safety – the distance to overcome in these points is in any case very short.
I can say that it is a very evoking route, full of water games and that gives us a sense of “adventure in the woods”. It is very relaxing and it is capable of renewing one’s mental energies. It is absolutely worth it.
The ideal time for this hike goes from April to September. Avoid rainy days because the soil becomes very slippery. Not recommended in case of snow or ice.
The trail is suitable for children and dogs, however they will have to be helped to pass over some natural obstacles and chain-equipped segments.
Wear hiking shoes.
Bring your lunch from home and eat it comfortably sitting on the rocks of the creek.
The path is identified, even when you need to cross the stream.
The trail is not very difficult, but it is uphill. If you are not very well trained you will probably spend more than the planned 4 hours for its completion.
The various stops to observe the magnificent landscape must be included in the calculation of the time required to complete the route.
How to get there
Up to Mandello del Lario (Lombardy region) by train or car. From there you need to reach the hamlet of Sonvico, where the trail starts (from the station about 45 minutes / 1 hour on foot).
Follow the directions for the path identified as 15B. The complete route is a ring, and once you reach the top of the hill you can return from the other side.
Here a map that indicates the starting point of the path: http://www.gulliver.it/itinerario-mappa/50806/
We haven’t completed the route and as a result we haven’t visited La Ferriera cave. After the largest waterfall, photographic symbol of the trail, we’ve decided to go back home because the sun was falling.
We will complete it next time with great pleasure.
